This is how to measure a gable roof
from the ground
-- regardless of the shape, or the number of dormers or valleys:
Three measurements are needed: the
length
of the roof at the eaves, the
width
(
span
) of the roof at the eaves, and the
rise
. For the length and width measure the ground from points directly under the corners of the roof at the eaves.
The rise must usually be measured visually. Often this can be done by counting the siding planks on the gable end and multiplying the number of planks by the exposed width of each plank.

The quantity of roofing material will exceed the area of the roof due to waste. This varies based on the complexity of the roof from 10 to 15%.
