T & G (Tongue and Groove)    Boards shaped with a tongue on one edge and a groove on the other so that they can be fitted together without gaps.Often used as paneling on interior walls. 

 

Tab      The exposed portion of strip shingles defined by cutouts.  

 

Tie-down    A metal strap or plate connecting the wood frame of wood construction buildings to the foundation to resist separation by seismic forcrs.

 

Time and materials contract     A construction contract which specifies a price for different elements of the work in terms of materials, labor, as well as overhead, profit and other burden.. Such a contract may have a maximum price.  

 

Trimmer     A wood frame member at the side of openings, parallel to studs or joists, and supporting a header. 

 

Tread      On stairs the level part of a step. The dimensionas are the width and the horizontal distance from the surface of one riser to the surface of the next.This distance does not include the nosing.  

 

Treated lumber     A wood product that has been impregnated with chemicals to reduce damage from wood rot or insects. Often used for the portions of a structure likely to be regularly in contact with moisture.  

 

Trim      The finish materials in a building, such as moldings, applied around openings or at the floor and ceiling of rooms. 

 

Truncated      The apex of a roof is replaced by a flat, often balustraded deck.  

 

Truss      A manufactured wood member often in the form of a large triangle used to form the ceiling joists and rafters.
